Something for Nothing

Recently I had one of my major dreams come true- I have purchased my own home. However, it's not EXACTLY what I wanted...it's BETTER than that. Not only do I have my own home but somebody else is paying the mortgage. Yep, you got that right, SOMEBODY ELSE IS PAYING MY MORTGAGE! Now how did I manage that you might ask. Well, it's because I've purchased an apartment. The place I call home has been in my family for generations and when my uncle (the previous owner) was looking to sell, I snapped it up. And because I was family, he sold it to me for about 10,000 LESS than it's actual value, so I have equity built right in at the time of sale! Of course, since the house has been in the family for generations, it's not exactly NEW. However, I am still paying "rent" which will go towards upkeep and what's great is that I don't ever have to worry about anyone jacking up the rent or getting pushed out of my own place. I am essentially getting SOMETHING for NOTHING. And that is where George Gordon's School of Law comes in. I've been listening to his show for quite a while and it was because of his lessons on Law, Finance, and Religion, that I was able to see the apartment as the deal that it was. On one of his lessons Mr. Gordon discussed getting something for nothing- that you should keep your eyes open and look for the deals that people otherwise might not see...like buying an apartment to live in rather than a house. You have to learn to set aside some of your ego in order to make your financial dreams come true. Would I have liked to have a big house all to myself...of course I would!...but I wouldn't want the burden of a mortgage. So I decided to stick with the family homestead and I'm better off for it too. I don't have to worry about the mortgage because it comes in a week early every month (I have a WONDERFUL tenant downstairs) and I don't have more house than I can handle! It's just me and the cat, btw, and I have 5 rooms (including kitchen and bath) and not all of the rooms get used. In fact, even when my sweetheart is here we still don't use all of the rooms and we are able to give each other space when needed.
The next time you make a major purchase, you have to set aside your ego and look at all of the pros and cons...and you may find a deal where you get something for nothing that you may have otherwise overlooked!
